Chapter Six

I stood there, rooted to the spot in shock. Of all the things Caleb could have been hiding from me, this was the last thing I expected.

The bear roared, beckoning with its head to come closer. At first, I couldn’t move, but when he roared again, somehow managing to make it reassuring, I forced myself to take one step, then another until I was standing next to him.

Hand shaking, I reached out to feel his fur. To my surprise, it felt a lot like stroking a really, really large dog. His fur was a little courser and longer, but if I closed my eyes, I could imagine that I was next to a large Newfoundland instead of a grizzly bear powerful enough to rip me to shreds.

As I ran my fingers through his fur, I gradually became more and more relaxed, my initial fear gradually subsiding. This was Caleb. This was who he really was.

Caleb made a strange noise, jerking his head towards his back.

“You want me to climb on?” I asked, hardly daring to believe that this was really happening.

Caleb nodded, kneeling down to make it easy to climb onto him. Grabbing two large handfuls of fur, I pulled myself up, throwing my leg over his back. I leaned forward and rubbed my face against his fur, loving the way the lingering scent of his aftershave mixed with the bear smell. I inhaled deeply, drinking him up with every inch of my body.

When he was sure I was sitting comfortably, Caleb roared and reared up, forcing me to cling tightly to his back as he took off, running through the forest. I’d ridden horses when I was younger, but it was nothing like this. As Caleb pounded through the trees, I became used to gripping with my knees, adjusting to how broad he was beneath me, eventually becoming bold enough to sit up, reveling in the feel of the wind rushing past me.

“Woo-hoo!” I whooped, the sound echoing through the trees as Caleb roared in answer.

I don’t know how long we spent running. It could have been minutes or it could have been hours. Either way, I didn’t care. I was with Caleb and it had never felt more right.

At last, Caleb trotted up to a log cabin tucked away in the middle of the forest. As I slipped off his back, the mist rose up around him, dissipating to reveal his human form again. His very naked human form.

“I’ll just go and fetch some clothes,” he called over his shoulder as he padded inside, completely at ease in his skin. “Make yourself comfortable in the lounge and I’ll be with you in a minute.”

I followed him into the cabin, enjoying the view of his toned buttocks as he walked. It seemed a shame to let him cover up, but we still had a lot of talking to do and I wasn’t going to be able to listen to a word he said while I was confronted by the sight of his body.
